Today’s Kona Cotton color of the day is Kumquat.
Kumquat is a medium orange color, reminiscent of fruit after which it’s named. Kumquats are a type of citrus and come from a small-fruit bearing tree in the plant family Rutaceae.
As it is probably well-known, I am not a huge fan of orange colors. I enjoy them mixed with other colors, but as a whole…. not my fave. But, when a quilt is done really right, like the one you’ll see below, I find that I like the color more. Here it is.
I love how the background looks like a sunset or a sunrise, depending on your point of view and the white blocks look like twinkling stars. It’s just beautiful!

- The Kumquat plant is native to south Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.
- The earliest reference to Kumquats is in Chinese literature from the 12th century.
- The have been cultivated in India, Japan, Tawain, Phillipines and southeast Asia.
- They were introduced in Europe in 1846 by Robert Fortune.
- The English name “kumquat” is derived from the Chinese word “gam-gwat”, meaning Golden Orange.
- They have glossy dark green leaves and white flowers.
- The skin is thin and sweet and the fruit can be mouth puckeringly sour.
