Today’s Kona Cotton color of the day is Coal. Coal is a medium to dark grey.
When I was around the age of four, my parents were preparing to go to a Christmas party that some friends were throwing. At the time, my mother worked for one of the “Baby Bells” in the city. Baby Bells were short terms for the small city telephone companies before most of them got eaten up by A T & T. We lived in the country about an hour outside of the city where my mother worked. I was sat down in a chair to wait for my mom to be ready to go to the party when I saw a bag sitting next to her purse. Being the curious four year old that I was, I opened the bag and I thought I had died and gone to a kid heaven candy store. So many candies and chocolates! I think I said something to her and she realized that I had seen the bag and yelled at me. Of course she scared me and I started crying. But she immediately apologized for scaring me, hugged me and then told me it was candy for our Christmas stockings and that it was now OUR secret and I couldn’t tell anybody. I was so proud that my mother entrusted me with a special secret, that only she and I knew. And I never told anyone until after Christmas morning, when we enjoyed those special candies and chocolates.
But there were a few times later in my childhood years when maybe I wasn’t so cute and tested my mother’s patience more than once. That’s when I got the threat of coal in my stocking if I didn’t behave myself. I’m pretty sure that threat came around at least 2 or 3 times. But, I never received coal in my stocking. But if I had known anything about quilting or sewing then, THIS is the coal I would have wanted to receive.
Coal could make a really fun background fabric as noted in the two quilts above. What would you make with Coal? Let us know in the comments below!
